The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) arrested police officer Tarun Barot in the Ishrat Jahan fake encounter case here on Saturday.

Mr. Barot, a Deputy Superintendent of Police, has already been under arrest by the CBI in the Sadiq Jamal fake encounter case.

He was serving in the Crime Branch in 2004 when the encounter took place.

On Thursday, the CBI arrested IPS officer G.L. Singhal for the killing of 19-year-old college girl Ishrat and her three accomplices in 2004 on the city’s outskirts. Mr. Singhal is among the 20 policemen, including DIG Vanzara, named in the case.

The court on Friday, however, rejected the CBI’s application for Mr. Singhal’s police custody. Mumbra girl Ishrat, along with Javed Sheikh, Zeeshan Johar and Amjad Ali Rana, was killed by a team of Ahmedabad Crime Branch officers. The officials had claimed that the four were LeT members who were on a mission to kill Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi.
