Draw of lots to select LPG distributors

Minister of Petroleum & Natural Gas Murli Deora on Thursday approved a proposal to select distributors for LPG in the country through a draw of lots, making the entire process more transparent.

The new pattern of selection was successfully introduced under Rajiv Gandhi Gramin LPG Vitrak (RGGLV) scheme.

“This would expedite the process of establishing distributorships, as in the present system a number of complaints are received against the successful candidates leading to delays in commissioning. The change in the procedure would help achieve faster progress in the government's endeavour to expand reach of LPG to uncovered areas,” Mr. Deora said.

The Minister said that a list of applicants fulfilling minimum requirements would be prepared, followed by a draw of lot in the presence of the representatives of public authorities. The process will also be video-graphed.

Under his Ministry's ‘Vision 2015,' Mr. Deora has asked for augmenting petroleum products marketing infrastructure under which the LPG network is targeted to cover 75 per cent of the population by 2015. At present, about 55 per cent of the population is covered.
