With the setting up of special court exclusively to hold trial in 2G scam, the CBI is expected to place in the Supreme Court on Tuesday the draft chargesheet against former Telecom Minister A. Raja and others including top executives of some telecom firms.

The CBI and Enforcement Directorate will also place their status report of their further probe in the scam and the transcripts of corporate lobbyist Niira Radia’s telephonic conversations tapped by the IT department before a bench of justices G.S. Singhvi and A.K. Ganguly.

On the last date of hearing on March 16, the agencies had informed the court that chargesheet would be filed against the former minister on various charges including of corruption, money laundering, cheating and forgery.

The draft chargesheet would be filed in compliance of the apex court order which had asked the agency to take its approval on the chargesheet before it is filed in the trial court.

The Delhi Government on Monday issued a notification designating Om Prakash Saini as a special judge to undertake the trial of 2G scam cases exclusively and in a separate notification, the Finance Ministry designated the sessions court of Mr. Saini as special court to deal with offences under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act 2002.

Mr. Saini is dealing with the case as a special CBI judge and all the matters connected to the scam including the private complaint filed by Janata Party chief Subramanian Swamy is pending before him.

Earlier, the CBI had informed the apex court that the first chargesheet will be filed against Mr. Raja and two companies and later on against other accused persons.

“The main chargesheet will be filed against Raja and two companies by March 31. This is only the beginning and many people and companies would also be chargesheeted later on,” the CBI had told the bench which had asked the agency to appoint a suitable prosecutor for trial.

“Look out for the best man. We want the most competent person to be appointed as the Special Public Prosecutor and he will deal with no other case,” the bench had said.

The court had also said it would look into the plea for forming a committee to assist and monitor the probe into the case after the petitioner pleaded that an expert body is required to oversee the investigation by CBI and ED.
