February 07, 2014 01:31 am | Updated May 18, 2016 06:31 am IST - PANAJI:

The Goa State Human Rights Commission on Wednesday directed that the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas should make efforts to distribute subsidy to bona fide consumers of cylindered gas, within the permissible limit of nine cylinders, through banks concerned without insisting that consumers have Aadhaar Card.

After taking suo motu cognisance of reports in newspapers that despite the Supreme Court’s directions, concerned authorities were asking for the card for paying subsidy benefits to consumers of cylinder gas, the Commission issued notices on November 1, 2013 to different stakeholders, including the Directorate of Civil Supplies, Goa and Secretary, Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas to respond.

The Commission observed that insisting on possession of Aadhaar Card amounted to gross violation of the orders of the Supreme Court.
