Former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi on Saturday said his party has no objection to Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee’s candidature for the Presidency.

The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) on Saturday came out in support of Union Finance Minister and veteran Congress leader Pranab Mukherjee, if he was fielded as the Congress candidate in the Presidential election.

Talking to reporters here, DMK president M. Karunanidhi said he had no objection to Mr.Mukherjee becoming the President. “But the candidate (of the United Progressive Alliance of which DMK is a constituent) is yet to be decided “, he added.

When the presspersons persistently asked him what would be his stand if the Congress leader was announced as the candidate of the UPA, he said he was instrumental in bringing Mr. Mukherjee to Chennai as early as 1969 for a conference on ‘State autonomy'.

Asked whether such a response was tantamount to saying that he had no objection to Mr.Pranab Mukherjee becoming the President, Mr.Karunanidhi said “if he is the candidate, DMK will not hesitate to support his candidature.”
