Karunanidhi says government not only allowed U.S. draft resolution to be diluted but also failed to consider amendments suggested by party
Amid raging protests by students and an upsurge in pro-Lankan Tamil sentiment in Tamil Nadu in the run-up to the U.N. Human Rights Council (UNHRC) vote against Sri Lanka, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam on Tuesday decided to come out of the United Progressive Alliance (UPA), arguing that staying in the government and the ruling combine would do great harm to the cause of Lankan Tamils.
DMK president M. Karunanidhi announced his party’s decision to quit both the government and the Congress-led UPA, just a day after Union Ministers P. Chidambaram, A. K. Antony and Ghulam Nabi Azad tried in vain to persuade him to back down from his core demand that the U.S.-backed resolution at the Geneva-based UNHRC be made tougher. He also ruled out providing outside support to the UPA government.
The DMK has 18 members in the Lok Sabha and six members in the Rajya Sabha. Mr. Karunanidhi’s announcement was greeted by DMK leaders and cadre, who celebrated it by bursting of crackers and raising anti-Congress slogans.
Mr. Karunanidhi said the government had not only allowed the U.S. draft resolution to be diluted, but also failed to consider implementing amendments suggested by the DMK. “It has created a situation that will in no way benefit Sri Lankan Tamils,” he told journalists at the DMK headquarters here.
The DMK chief said while the “genocide” in Sri Lanka was a topic of discussion on the world stage, India’s failure to understand the gravity of the situation and its indifference was anti-democratic. The Centre had let him down badly, he said, but rejected a suggestion that the general opinion was that the party should have quit in 2009 itself, terming it “perverse.”
He said everyone wanted the U.N. and the UNHRC to analyse the situation in a fair manner and take an appropriate decision. “On the contrary, India opened its door for anti-democratic activities and no Tamil with self-respect will accept it.”
J. Balaji reports from New Delhi:
Soon after submitting the letter of withdrawal of support to President Pranab Mukherjee at night, the DMK said it would function as a constructive opposition party. “We are not here to topple the government,” said DMK spokesperson T.K.S. Elangovan.

I pray that india does not add srilanka in its enemy list. The only
reason is, as srilanka is a friend now, it is releasing all the INDIAN
Tamil fishermen whoever crossed the sea border. Indian Govt, please
think about the INDIAN Tamil fishermen living in Rameshwaram who is
bound to cross the indian sea border because the indian fishing area
is too small, and they are used to fishing beyond the borders for
generations. Please dont spare Indian tamil people for Srilankan Tamil
people. If indian govt/DMK truly cares about Srilankan Tamil people,
they should support Srilanka in rehabitization of the remaining
people, and keep monitoring them. Adding srilanka to enemy list will
neither benifit Srilankan tamil people not Indian Tamil people.
Whole credit for this mass movement should go to Vaiko and MDMK
Quit UPA but will not SINK it.? So drama is clear right?
@ Ravi- I have to highlight that why only SriLanka is an issue in TN is because Tamils in Malaysia, Singapore and USA are not raped by locals and local army in daily basis. Please understand the difference. I would appreciate if you can understand the difference between common man's emotions and politicians gamble. Now the situation and fight by students in TN are common man's emotions and they dont any more get fooled by POlitical drama.
I would appreciate if Hindu can stop posting comments from Sri lankans. They have no right to talk. Publish only if their comments support Tamils or oppose Rakshasapaksa.
There are lot many other issue going in the boarder.. like one headache
is still with our Indian fisherman getting attacked by srilanken coast
guards... without caring and giving first priority to our Indian tamil
people.. instead fighting for another island people.. I am not saying we
should not care them.. but then i'm saying you folks can fight for
Indian fisherman's...
Another drama by Karunanidhi in the name of suffering Srilankan tamils . He could have donated crores and crores of rupees for the upliftment of the Tamils who suffered in the war. Did DMK do it ?? not even a penny is the truth .He has been shedding crocodile tears ... in the name of Tamils just to garner votes in the coming elections . If he is really sincere let him do something concrete for building their lives ? Will he do atleast now ?
I'm a Sri Lankan and I saw how Sinhala, Tamil, Muslim people suffered from the war in last three decades. Not only tamils even Sinhala and muslim people sacrifice their lives in vain. If the Politicians in Tamil Nadu really represent tamils in Sri Lanka why don't they help IDPs in Sri Lanka. They didn't even spend a rupee for them and now talking about their rights. IDPs in Sri Lanka doesn't want a country, their first priority is a comfortable life. Dear Indian Brother help the IDPs first if you really care about them.
India should support US resolution on this, since it will help bring justice to Sri Lankan tamils and expose Sri Lankan govt's atrocities against them.
The UPA is hesitant to take any action on this, since this issue is very personal for Cong party leader and no where in the world a country has encouraged other country to do genocide.
Having lived outside of India several years, we can witness that India has commited many misteps on every other issue like sending Italian criminals back to Italy for vacation, election etc. and does not have clue on how to react.
A political drama by DMK has come to an end.Cheap publicity aiming at
2014 election is achieved. The problem of Tamils could have easily been
solved if differentiation between terrorism and the right of the
Tamils was made in 2009 it self. DMK should have advised or suggested
this to UPA. But it failed. Now it is the Human rights issue that is
due to excess, that has to be tackled.India can only request Sri lanka
to take action against the erring official with strong words as the
Government of India has to maintain it s Foreign policy in tact to
avoid future complications. Mr.Karunanidhi likes to get political gain
Very late decision. The DMK could have withdrawn support, when the UPA II had been romanticizing with the Rajapaksa Government in the post-LTTE Period that witnessed killings in Sri Lanka. Mr. Karunanidhi has done it now, when the emotions among the Tamil groups have reached its zenith, only because of fear that other Tamil parties especially the AIADMK and MDMK should not get this recognition as the guardian of Tamils in the world political scenario in voicing the cause of Sri Lankan Tamils. In fact, Mr. Vaiko is the one who deserves it, has been highlighting this issue and even met President Barack Obama in the USA in 2009, when the DMK was romanticizing with the Congress. This is a clear political move by the Karunanidhi Family to regain its political popularity after many scams and arrest in the central as well as state. Karunanidhi is ‘Father of Linguistic Politics’.
In a sense, the so called vocal Tamils from Tamil Nadu was responsible for the near destruction of Tamil’s in 2009. No doubt, the Sri Lankan Government will have to answer for all the genocide it had committed and for the war crimes. But at the same time, the SriLankan Government should be made responsible enough to find ways and means few the peaceful co-existences of Tamils in Sri Lanka. There are many ways to do.Elam is not the only answer. It is time that we the Indians, especially the Tamilans give our moral support to both - to the Sri Lankan left out Tamils and the National Government to rebuild the Tamil community in Sri Lanka rather than once again make the Sri Lanka Government to go all out to wipe out the entire race from the face of Sri Lanka. Better the politicians, students community and the Tamil outfits restrain from any emotional outbursts, but ,if need be, make a one day complete hartal to show our solidarity. It is time to build bridges and not to burn realtionship.
This threatening they do theoretically not practically, the DMK is
hungry for power so during NDA there MPs were ministers holding big
posts now in UPA they do, tommorrow they will tell no we will support
UPA
The current Sri Lankan issue did give upper edge to DMK to bully the
Congress, the main party in the coalition. Congress must be bowled
over as DMK had disengaged out from the UPA pergola and signaled a
shift of coalition-patronage in the ensuing 2014 Lok Sabha polls and
Congress is really flabbergasted. DMK must have engaged in revamping
its rudimentary political sacrilege during the past one week. Probably
it will maintain cooling period during the next one year and will
apply only counter strategy to that of AIADMK, the power house for
balanced perceptions of Tamil interests among majority of well-
informed people of all age groups with levelheaded outlook. If an
extreme situation arises due to a political-swivel wherein AIADMK
reluctantly keep aloof from the ostensible Third Front and fall into
the UPA fold, by then DMK would have joined with NDA! I would say that
DMK actually avoided getting dumped by the Congress lead UPA!
The People of India, particularly from the state of Tamil Nadu will
have empathy to the displaced war victims languishing in the refugee
camps in Sri Lanka. Naturally people of Tamil Nadu cannot hide their
longing sentiments for enabling the Tamil culture backed with a host
of traditional institutions like universities, temples, churches and
mosques of all religions brooked out from southern India, to proudly
persist its existence of generations in the island nation. This
mindset is the key criteria for the congregation of people’s support
by political parties prior to any elections solely for converting as
people’s mandate to be ratified in poll verdicts. Sri Lankan issue is
a key factor as a cloaked election tactic for three decades even among
national parties which becomes unavoidable under coalition politics
wherein more seats can be assured for the national party and the
regional party in Lok Sabha Poll and Assembly Poll respectively
ensuring a win-win accord for both parties.
Why is he doing this now, only because of 2014 ELECTION.
Government will start taking action against SRILANKA just 2 months
before election and they get the VOTE, then again same story.
Great Leader and Greatest FOLLOWERS. Followers will be fooled for
sure.
Whatever the consequences are, India should keep its stand clear from this regional issues.
There are millions of persons of Indian origins living in UK, USA, Canada.... there is not even
a murmur. Then we have Persons of Tamil origin in Sri Lanka, Fiji, Malaysia, Singapore,
Carribean islands... how only Sri Lanka is an issue? Is it because the Indians living in TN
particularly the politicians have made a career out of this? They also seem to have a notion
that they are different from every one and they will have a country of their one. A lot of this
could be the entire culture seems to be built on films - a make believe world and a huge
superiority complex.
Foreign policy should be based on practicality and not on emotions, DMK or for that matter India should have spoken out during the occurrence of these events rather than now, that at least would have saved some lives. Backing a US sponsored resolution will serve no purpose, it would further alienate Sri Lanka and will be detrimental for Tamils themselves.
Instead India should extract am assurance and concrete action from Sri Lanka, which would pave the way for Autonomy of Tamil regions in exchange for its support to Sri Lankan Government. What has been lost is lost, the least we can do is at least create a conducive environment for Tamils in Sri Lanka
This is a strategically well placed and yet easily discernible move by
the DMK aimed solely at swinging voters to their side in the event of
the next general elections. It is of stating the obvious that the party
has no real interests as far as the well being of the Sri Lankan Tamils
are concerned, as reflected by their indifference to the same issue on
numerous occasions in the past.
Trying to be more judgemental by interpreting DMK`s decision to quit
as a political game does not help the genuine cause of Tamils in Sri
Lanka who were massacred in thousands during the final stages of war
, while the whole world looked the other way.
It is besides the point whether parties play games --they do in any
case --but it is more vital to bring international pressure to bear on
Sri Lanka so that their war crimes are exposed to the world and
rehabilitation of the affected people takes the top most priority .
DMK should have protested when Prabhakaran's life was at danger and
scores of Tamils were butchered.
People of Tamilnadu should teach a lesson to the Congress party. Why Tamilians sentiments are not being taken in to account. Are we not part of India. No leader in congress with vision.
TN Politicians love to take up the "cause of Tamils" everywhere - but TN! The sad part is the gullible public (including college students) fall for it. Rights in SL or Singapore, will not eradicate the Electricity or Water shortages in TN - Focus People. Here and NOW.
Common man on the street welcomes this decision of the DMK. It is well
known fact that since 1950s Sri Lankan government has been
systematically denies rights of the Tamil people on education,
employment, economic development, livelihood security. It is all well
documented. Secondly, whenever Tamil people raised their voices
against such atrocities they were suppressed and thousands of innocent
Tamil people killed. This resulted in the development of groups such
as LTTE. Hence, Sri Lanka should treat Tamil with equal rights and
then only this problem will solve. till them we have to support Tamil
people in Sri Lanka
Let him take his way since he is trying to be back in power at Tamilnadu in any possible way. Unfortunately none of the political parties from Tamilnadu is concerned about the nations interest. They are just thinking of their regional interest only. The Govt. should not make any decisions accepting his conditions since it will make severe damages to the long term interests of the nation. He has not spelled a word on the Italian Marines issue just because he will not get any benefit in doing so. We have Kashmir and Arunachal where enimies are trying to get support from any corners of the world. We have to be vigilant so that the neighbouring nation will not become our enemy.
Dear Sir,
A right decision by DMK, but taken after a long delay.
They must press for a UN investigation in the circumstances and conditions, of Military operation against Sri Lankan Tamils.
Obviously it resulted in one of the worst man-made tragedies of the world.
Not only for Tamils, it is a vital point for the entire humanity, how human beings are treated.
In my opinion, no matter what the consequences are,India should DO THE RIGHT THING. And the right thing to do is to fight for equal rights of the Tamils in Sri Lanka. Our nation has values and we must stand by the right party and not the wrong ones for some diplomatic reasons.
As far these political decisions of pulling support out of the Government and other such activities, I am least bothered and in my opinion has no significance.
Congress should think with the right mind. What happened to the India I know which fought for East Pakistan, saved innocent tibetians and even rescued Maldives President all for the right reasons? I dont understand why India should be afraid of the ties between Sri Lanka and China if India fights for and gets a Tamil Eelam.
If we cannot take a straight forward decision by doing the right thing no matter what, we dont stand a chance of becoming a strong nation in Asia and to send a message to our neighbours. I will be ashamed of my own country's lead
We have to agree to the fact that Sri Lankan government is increasingly targeting Tamils there to crush them economically, politically and ethnically. Instead criticizing on DMK's action, let us put pressure on Indian government that why it is not taking a tougher stand against Sri Lanka. Why it is hesitating even to protest in strong words? Sri Lankan government indulged in genocide, the whole government system had committed crimes against hapless Tamil population. It is India's foremost duty to extend support for the Tamils by sending strong signals to the government in Sri Lanka. Mr Karunanidhi has done the right thing at the right time. India must read the vox populi and take a tougher action against Sri Lanka.
If the people are taken up by this ploy, even god can't help us anymore!!!
The motive for this move is suspect. When at helm of power, they did
precious little for Tamils in Tamilnadu but now they shed tears for
Srilankan tamils. Strange are the ways of politicians. What saddens me
is that a lot of innocent people get swayed by the misdirected passions
whipped up by politicians
Both DMK and AIADMK are shedding crocodile tears for SriLankan Tamilians.
Dear Mohit/Rahul, You have forgotten about Fiji crisis, why did indian government interefere in Fiji. During the year 2000,Mr Mahendra Chaudhry, was the prime minister of Fiji. Is it not their internal affairs.
This drama played for forecasting plan of MP election, throughout India and especially Tamil Nadu
Government is not stable, if every coalition party is withdrawing from
alliance. May be they can tell Government is safe for the time being.
Already Mamata Banarjee withdrawn. Now DMK. It seems Lok Sabha elections
are coming soon. If any one like SP or BSP withdrew now, then Government
will fell down immediately.
The so called politicians in India though they claim that are the people's representative in the govt, they act only for their selfish goals. This act of DMK also is targeting the 2014 election which is round the corner.
It is fixed quit from UPA. It is all preplanned between DMK and Congress
to save the face and try to get maximum mileage in elections. Congress
knows they are safe without their support. People get fooled easily by
these tactics. Otherwise DMK has been supporting all UPA policies all
these years, they will do same after the elections.
The Congaress with the support of the DMK destroyed Srilankan TAmils and their heritage. The present move by the DMK is untimely for the party and the Congress. The C ongress with its inept handling of Sri lankan Tamils issue from the begining is slowly destroying the unity of India as it did in the case of Sri lanka. No government at the Centre can anylonger tackle tamils problem in Sri lanka and in India. It has developed into a huge problem and the cage is too small for this ever expanding Tamils problem. There is no national government at the Centre and all central governments are banking on their vote bank politics. The Country is heading for a disaster and the Congress which is election oriented is abundantly contributing for the instability in the Country. There is a weak government and weak opposition party. The present leadership of the Congress to be blamed for all the mess.
I wouldn't be surprised if DMK allies with UPA again. Its too late now, world remembers the history.
Maybe this was a golden opportunity for Karunanidhi for making his Alagiri to resign from the Government with whom his relations are not okay. With one stone he has acquired two mangoes.Resignation of Alagiri and supporting Tamils in Srilanka.
Boss now people are watching everything around us; now peoples are not how they were been before 10-20 years. Don't use Srilanka matter for the vote bank. I will accept this decision if they did it at the time of war time. Pity on you DMK...
Mr Karunidhi will join NDA in a hope that he can enjoy at centre again for further 5 years
In a democratic country every political party has it's own right to adopt a stand on political issues which is relevent to the peaple for whom they stand for, in a democratic way.Srilankan Tamilian's issues is an imporant matter for the Tamilians as they are all related to them in one sense or other.Hence as a regional polytical party in Tamilnadu DMK's decision to withdraw the support is justifiable because they need to face the peaple there in future
Let us wait and see whether the ministers actually submit their
resignations to PM or Mr.Karunanidhi.He would have discussed several
riders and possibly discussed secretly that congress will agree his
demand of placing in parliament a motiom which do not have any teeth to
implement. Mr.Karunanithi will be satisfied that his demand is met with
hence with draw the resignation. He is making all out efforts to show as
if he is champion of world tamil community which is not the case.
The head line conveys a totally different message, from what it actually
intended to. It reads as if DMK was the only destabilizing factor in UPA
and with its departure, it is now stable and steady...Well I know that
UPA commands support of many fence sitters, to bail it through its term.
But, come to think of it, it is very immature and short sighted of DMK
to ask for India's vote on a resolution which will open a can of toxic
worms for India.. Kashmir and North East.. So it is good that UPA is
taking a well considered stand, without kneeling down to appease DMK.
These are the signs which truly show the unbecoming of the Indian
state. We have seen that, throughout the early years of independence
we had much more stable governments, not only because of the leaders,
but also because of the kind of support that they enjoyed in
Parliament. But today, with regional parties coming up every single
day, the mandate is only getting more divided. So, however strong the
leader, the government at the center will remain weak because of the
compulsions to abide by the Lakshman Rekhas drawn by the coalition
partners from all sides. Whoever wins the next election, the scene
will be no different and we will continue to falter unless we see to
it that we have only a few parties in the central legislatures, and
that state parties will be confined only to the state legislatures.
What about the plight of Malaysian Tamils? Why nobody is bothered about these people who are being persecuted even during the peace time.
Well some of the readers are wondering why people in Tamilnadu are
concerned about Srilankan Tamils. To begin with there is something
called ethnicity. We have seen many people from North India migrate in
US and UK and other countries. Whenever these people achieve something
we feel proud about it. We benefit a lot from their NRI money. But
what would happen if these people are tortured and killed by their
home country after some decades? Won`t Indians feel sorry for them?
Thats exactly what the Tamil population feels. Also India does have a
history of interfering when there is a humanitarian crisis (eg
Bangaldesh War) .Now with regards to Srilanka it is even more relevant
as everyone knows how close the Indian and Srilankan governments are.
India cannot do anything if there is a humanitarian crisis in some
African country, but it definitely can do something with regards to
Srilanka if it is willing.
May be a wrong decision at the wrong time OR.... a conspiracy. If Amma acts against MK, he will not get any support from the center and he can no longer request the center to stop giving power to TN. This may be a planned act to induce Amma to act and keep this action vivid when the election knocks the door.
Sincere request to Tamil Nadu people: Think thrice not twice, whom to vote before actually you do.
Will he have the tenacity to spill the beans of what transpired during numerous meets he had with visiting Advisers/Messengers/Officials etc on way from Delhi to Colombo and vise versa when he was in power ? Now, why the 'U' turn ?
This is absurd. As someone rightly said it is only a high drama. Having
enjoyed all the possible portfolios in the present and former UPA govt,
it is to gain the hearts of the Tamils whom they have been ruling for
years.Ths simple reason is the selfish interest of vote bank in the next
lok sabha elections. Shame on them for their drama of this kind.
Why is DMK withdrawing support for an issue which is not directly related to India ? They should be de-recognised as a political party and should not be allowed to contest elections. Taking a stand to earn brownie points with the Tamil voters should not be allowed. The freak nature of TN voters may bring another freaky party to power positions. It is time to go beyond regional and language sentiments and vote for the Nation. But with Tamil Nadu and Tamils, this is hard to expect. Tamil ego comes above all, even the nation.
@Rahul,only a few people are praising the governance of state
government. But in reality crores of people are suffering every day due
to power cuts, drinking water shortage, crop failure. Please do not mix up
two separate issue
Finally the cat has come out,but we are not sure it will not
backtrack. All genocide happened when Kalaignar was CM. People still
remember it. Kalaignar should lead peoples movement against Central
Govt's Eelam policy.
The atrocities committed by the SriLankan troops should be investigated and the guilty punished. Tamilians and the people of TN are looking upon the Government to demand an international enquiry into the war crimes. Our emotions were hurt when the foriegn minister called Sri Lankan Government as Inida's friend. And now the Government (with the tamil Finance Minister) wants to stay mute when it is supposed to lead the UN demand for impartial enquiry. This is an oppurtunity for India to underline its status as a superpower and wrest the initiative at the Geneva Council.
The country and the countrymen have paid a heavy price as a consequence of continuance of this utterly corrupt regime at the centre through unholy coalition, especially during the past 9 years. Hence, this congress-led UPA dispensation, which has lost all legitimacy now to govern, should resign forthwith and recommend to the President for the dissolution of the Loksabha and fresh elections.
Every other parties in Tamilnadu changed their position time to
time. There is no exception. Those who are blaming DMK should not forget
the fact that,it was only DMK who lost power in Tamilnadu on Srilankan
Tamil issue.Even if DMK pulled ou on 2009.nothing would have changed the
the way the war in Srilanka was fought.Only those who wanted to see DMK
out of UPA-2 would have been happy so that they can enjoy power with
Congress.
This is coalition drama at its best. If the next government is also made up by such coalition politics, expect nothing much for the aam aadmi. Except for hollow verbal onslaughts from our countrymen in power
May Be DMK has acted for its selfish gains or seemingly for Vote bank but one thing i am not able to understand is that they are critical over issues with people in foreign lands but not about Indians.
They care more about Tamil issue than INDIA, is their any value of a NATION for such people?
Absolutely mindless blackmail. How can we complain of Pakistan's parliament passing a resolution thus interfering in our internal affairs and simultaneously do a "Pakistan Parliament" and interfere in their internal processes. Secondly, knowing a party like his, ready to roll like a ball at the sight of one benefit or other, there is no doubt that the party or its members give a damn about what happens in Sri Lanka or for that matter anywhere. I believe they are just trying their luck if they can ride on popular sentiments to ward-off AIADMK's much improved governance and policies. Also, they might be hoping to wash away what Mr. Raja (their representative) did at the center with this populist and expedient outcry, especially when the general elections are approaching.
The Aam Aadmi can only ask for an explanation as to why MK / DMK did not have the same courage to quit and withdraw support when the attrocities were taking place and MK at that time in history which everyone can vividly remember stood (or sat) quietly watching as a mute sepctator. WHY?
first we should decide about the people of India then the Srilankan
Tamils. good relations with Srilanka is strategically important as China
has been increasingly involving in Srilanka and also faster release of
fishermen and others, suffering in jails of Srilanka. We can bring war
time criminals to justice through other means by more cooperation and
dialogue. Congress has done right thing by not heeding DMK.
Its sad. Regional party's ascendancy to center creates hurdle in making foreign policy. I think we have to maintain good relationship with our neighbors so in this case We wont take part during the vote. that's make better sense.
Another drama by Karuna to milk the humanitarian crisis in
SriLanka and get some favors from UPA.Otherwise he doesnt have the
muscle to take on congress after the defeat in 2011.Anyway opportunistic
Mulayam is waiting to cash on the instability
At the fake end of UPA II carrier only, he has taken this stand as usually done by him. When Lanka was burning at that time he had lobbied for getting plump posts to his family members.
Now bring into focus the 2G case and Karuna will backtrack.
Next year general elections are coming, So as expected, forcefully
Mr.Karunanithi has taken this decision.
Sir,
The Sri Lanka issue has become handy for Mr. MK to move out of the
UPA. 2014 is not far away. He earlier supported the BJP when Mr.
Vajpayee was PM and enjoyed power. Then he came out of NDA and joined
the UPA and enjoyed power for two terms. An alliance again with the
BJP and enjoy power in the event of later's triumph is haunting his
mind.
He should have pulled out of the UPA when tamilians were killed by the
Sri Lankan army in 2009 itself.
What a shrewd politician he is.
welcome DMK.....correct Decision made by DMK
I guess all Indian need to be thought Indian first then comes your
religion or language.
People of Tamil Nadu elected your party Sir, can you please ensure the
TN issues and fundings are addressed in parliament
1) Water
2) Electricity
No problem protesting and highlighting the plight of fellow human, but
you job and the oath was to uphold the plight of people who voted you.
This is the first time Congress has taken a firm stand in not giving
to the opportunistic dictates of the DMK party. It is unfortunate to note that most of the Dravidian parties want a war to be enacted against Srilanka by our Indian army and liberate Eelam as India did in 1971 during Pakistan war. Well 1971 interanational situation was totally different. Today Soviet union doesnt exist. it is an unipolar power which is existing. I only wish these politicians apply their mind before jumping to rash decisions. So also the student community and the cinema industry jumps into the fray without any application of mind to the International scenario. It is high time Tamil nadu govt bans all such activities of agitations against another country.
gopu
when India is able to acknowledge the sufferings of people in east pakistan (now bangladesh) secured them freedom, provide shelter to the tibetans in Dharmasala quoting human rights against Chinese, rum all the way to Maldives to secure a elected PM in its embassy, why not for Tamils. History always have been in favour of the sufferings that the SL tamils have been undergoing all along, why not Indian Givt Push for greater freedom for the tamils there as per the 13th amendment promised by SL govt in the 80s. India is a sole superpower in the Indian Ocean, India must not wait for the US and it must take pro-active measures to ensure equal rights, freedom of expression for press and liberty to one and all. India had a problem with LTTE, now that they cease to exist what is the problem with SL to guarantee the 13th amendment??? Is SL taking India lightly making promises that are never and never will get honoured....
As the term of this Congress Govt draws to a close, the constituents start looking elsewhere, for potential greener pastures in the upcoming Parliament elections. Political history is repeating itself ! Sri Lanka issue has been going on for ages and used for purely political gains, by all political parties in Tamilnadu, from time to time, whenever they found it useful or when they could not get hold of any other issue. So the show goes on.
MK can retract his statement at anytime.Hence beware of this!He is
taking up the cause for Srilankan Tamils. What about the Tamils in Tamil
Nadu? Why he has not resigned when power is denied, water is denied?Has
he been voted by TN people or by Srilankan Tamils?
The biggest contributor to the bad name of UPA-I and II, is out.
Nothing will happen to UPA gov. But Karuna and Jaya will be the ultimate
losers.
Sri Lanka and India will prosper with good friendship.
Right decision taken at right time.
It is a welcome decision, because that is the only way we can protest against the injustices to Tamils in Sri Lanka. India should vote in favor of US sponsored resolution against Sri Lanka. Let the UPA government assure the DMK that justice will be done to the Tamils in Sri Lanka, DMK will be happy to join again, even before Thursday.
Well, somehow this was not done when war happened. This was not done
when Kaveri delta was suffering. This was not done when whole of TN
was in Power Blackout almost whole day. This was not done when 2G
surfaced. But yeah, for a crime in a foreign country it is very
important to stand for Tamil rights. If DMK not able to convince UPA
for this, why should we believe, DMK did the right thing. The idea
seems more Politically driven eyeing for much earlier election. As
this is the only available momentum. Free TV will not work this time.
May be free petrol.
This is nothing a but a big drama by DMK and Congress. Congress
reacted as if it is interested in Sri Lanakan Tamils's welfare by
heeding to the request of MK and meeting him in his residence
yesterday. It is time these political "actors" are shown the door and
kicked out of power. Already UPA-II lost all its glory it gained when
it came to power and people of India have lost faith in Manmohan
Singh. His wisdom is traded for the political mileage. And talking of
MK, he used the power to get all the benefits in the last 4 yrs and
right at the final stage, he is exiting - which is of no use. If
Congress is serious on checking corruption they must show guts to
arrest the beneficiaries of 2G scam in DMK!
It is too late for the DMK to pull out. At least now the DMK has
realized the ground reality and looking forward a meaningful aritmatics.
We still believe, the DMK does not have any hidden agenda other than the
Srilankan Tamil issue.
Their past actions only makes me suspicious that every such move of DMK is a trade-off for a personal gain ( in fact to prevent losses as there is nothing to gain further for them).
Finally some act after series of talkings
Good decision although a late one. we welcome it.
At long last, it has happened. Congress should say, good riddance. Riding piggyback on Congress, the DMK has already enjoyed the 'fruits' of power. Shedding crocodile tears on the Srilankan Tamil issue, what DMK was trying to make out, is nothing but a high drama. With only few months left for the general elections, the Congress should take it easy and recommend dissolution of the Parliament. With one constituent or the other threatening to withdraw the support to the UPA-II from the time it was formed, it was suicidal for the Congress. It is the PM Manmohan Singh who deserves praise/prize for being tolerant all these years.
Congress has made more in the last 7 yrs than in the previous 58, So now
they will pretend martyrdom and rejoice?
It is too late Mr.Karunanidhi. Had you done it when the srilankan army was killing the innocent tamil people in 2009, we would have said "Well Done Sir". That time you wanted to enjoy the fruits. Hence did not do the right thing. Most of the srilankan tamil women have undergone unbearable sufferings and lost their chastity. What is the use in taking this decision today?
What a nice way of getting out of UPA after almost getting kicked out during 2G Scam!
Where are Sri Lankan Tamils in all this drama!
Such a nice decision hats of to DMK chairperson
DMK had already inflicted irreversible and irrevocable damage to Sri Lankan tamils by supporting UPA government all these 9 years. Its pull out from UPA is not acceptable. Earlier it betrayed Srilankan Tamils by aligning with UPA and now by pulling out it betrayed UPA.
One never knows the next move: Turn about! Wait & watch is the next
step. Will the UPA2 survive now? SP supremo & DMK on the
offensive in a big way to pull the carpet & do the unexpected! Does
Mamta's forecast hold some credence, since she was quick to issue her
usual rhetoric about the downfall of the UPA2 & the date of election
within two to three months? The Govt of India, therefore, will have to go
all out to redo its permutation & combination afresh to escape the
onslaught of the DMK &/or SP ?
entire nation should be happy as DMK Ministers are OUT...
