Contrary to media perception, the Archaeological Survey of India has claimed that its digging for gold at a dilapidated site in Unnao was done “not merely on the request of any particular individual.”

It was earlier quoted that the ASI had initiated digging at the dilapidated fort of Raja Ram Baksh Singh in the Buxar area of Unnao after Shoban Sarkar, head priest of the Shobhan Temple, claimed to have dreamt of 1,000 tonnes of gold buried under the ruins of the fort.

Sarkar had claimed that Raja Ram Baksh Singh appeared in his dream and told him about the treasure. The seer had claimed that gold would be found after 15 feet of digging.

However, even after a month of digging (October 18 to November) no gold was found. Responding to an RTI query by Lucknow-based social activist Nutan Thakur, the ASI has claimed that the excavation was “routine work.”

This digging was done in compliance of the letter dated October 18 sent by Syed Jamal Hasan, Director, Excavation, to the Superintending Archeologist, the ASI said.
