Condemning the brutal rape of a five-year-old girl in Delhi, CPI (M) Polit Bureau member Brinda Karat on Saturday said that it was a “shameful” act and demanded strong action against the policemen accused of offering bribe to the victim’s family to bury the case.

“Atrocities against women and children are increasing. The recent incident of rape in Delhi is very shameful for India. When a five-year old child is not spared and sexually assaulted, I do not understand where the Indian society is heading,” Ms. Karat said during a press conference.

It is shameful for the government and the people of India to remain silent spectators to such heinous crimes, she said.

“It was also shameful on the part of the police to try to bribe the parents of the child, instead of filing an FIR in this case. The way the police behaved with the victim’s family was unwarranted and highly objectionable,” she added.

These policemen should be punished and sent to jail, she said adding that things would not improve until such erring policemen are put behind bars.
