Deadline for memorial land

October 23, 2012 01:26 am | Updated October 18, 2016 03:12 pm IST - MUMBAI:

The Republican Party of India-Athavale group has served an ultimatum on the Maharashtra government to hand over the Indu Mills land by December 5 for the construction of a memorial for Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar, or else it would take charge of the premises on December 6.

RPI(A) leader Ramdas Athavale led around 300 party activists from Chaityabhoomi in Dadar to Indu Mills on Monday, pressing the demand.

After the protest, the police detained 275 activists, along with Mr. Athavale, under the Bombay Police Act.

“The government can give 500 acres of Dalits’ land to Sonia Gandhi’s son-in-law, but when it comes to giving land for the memorial of the architect of the Indian Constitution, the government keeps dilly-dallying. On the ‘Mahaparinirvan Divas’ of Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar, this protest will be intensified,” Mr. Athavale said.
