After being accused of triggering a farmer’s suicide at a rally in New Delhi earlier this month, senior Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Kumar Vishwas found himself mired in a controversy yet again on Monday.

This time, it was after he was summoned by the Delhi Commission for Women on a defamation complaint filed by a woman AAP volunteer — a mother of two and a resident of Nand Nagari in North East Delhi. The victim claimed she was threatened by Mr. Vishwas and his supporters when she approached him to clarify his stand on their relationship after coming across some pictures.

However, Mr. Vishwas accused the media at large of “working for the Modi government” and the BJP of defaming him through the episode.

It is claimed that the AAP woman volunteer came across several pictures of hers with Mr. Vishwas on social media sites on March 30 with underlying captions alleging that both of them had recently been caught in an objectionable position by the wife. The pictures are alleged to have been circulated by Mangesh Shete, Chhotelal Prajapati, S.K. Pradhan and Ravi Singh, who, according to the AAP, belong to the Bharatiya Janata Party.

BJP trying to defame me: Vishwas

The AAP woman volunteer in her defamation complaint, to the Delhi Commission for Women said: “I was shocked when I came across these pictures; when my husband saw them, he turned me out of the house. He has threatened to leave me and this entire episode has destroyed my family life.”

“I have been running from pillar to post, from police stations to the DCP to Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s residence since March — but no one helped me; all I want is for Mr. Vishwas to step forward and tell the world that there is no relationship — physical or otherwise — between us,” she added.

The complainant claims she first approached the Nand Nagari police station, then the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) and finally visited Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s residence for intervention but was denied an audience at each successive step.

The Delhi Police attributed the delay in converting the victim’s complaint into a criminal case to a delayed report from the district cyber cell. “She had approached us with her complaint on March 31 which, when analysed, revealed that it was based on electronic transmission of data; this report was given to us on April 29 following which the complaint was converted into a case,” said a senior police officer.

Mr. Vishwas said the complainant was “like his sister.” “This is a controversy to defame me by the BJP and several media channels are running a campaign to discredit me,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Congress sought a probe against Mr. Vishwas and accused Mr. Kejriwal of shielding the guilty.
