Upset at the police not registering a case of gang rape following an assault on her on February 6, a minor belonging to the Scheduled Caste allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself at her house in Bilbilan village in Sonepat, Haryana, on Wednesday.

“The girl had gone to the village to fetch wood when she was abducted and assaulted by the men, who had kept her confined for nearly 24 hours,” said her paternal uncle. Police registered a case of rape and arrested one man in connection with the crime.

Her uncle said it was anger at not getting justice and a misplaced sense of guilt at having brought a bad name to the family that made the victim end her life.

A police officer said the family’s claim that the girl had been gang-raped was wrong. He claimed that the victim was unable to overcome the trauma and took the extreme step.
