A Delhi court on Thursday allowed custodial interrogation of former CWG Organising Committee official M. Jayachandran for two more days by the CBI to unravel alleged financial bungling in conduct of the Queen’s Baton Relay (QBR) in London last year.
While extending Mr. Jayachandran’s CBI custody, the Special CBI court also remanded two other sacked CWG OC officials T.S. Darbari and Sanjay Mahendroo to judicial custody for 13 days.
The court sent the two to Tihar Jail after the CBI told the court that they were no longer required for interrogation by the agency.
Mr. Darbari and Mr. Mahendroo, who were arrested on November 15, have already been quizzed for nine days by the CBI sleuths.
Extending Mr. Jayachandran’s custody, Special CBI Judge A.S. Yadav said, “In view of the relevant circumstances and in order to complete further investigation, the accused is remanded to the CBI custody till November 27.”
Meanwhile, Mr. Darbari moved the court seeking regular bail.
Issuing notice to the CBI on his bail plea, the court fixed it for hearing on November 30.
The CBI had earlier submitted that the accused, who are highly connected and powerful, were evasive, non-cooperative and not coming up with the truth during the probe.
Mr. Darbari was part of the empowered committee, entrusted with the task to hold the QBR, the agency had said adding, documents showed that he fabricated e-mails and accepted illegal gratifications.
Detailing the role of the accused, CBI had said they entered into a criminal conspiracy and abusing their official positions, awarded the work to M/s AM Car and Van Hire Limited on the basis of false and forged documents (e-mails) and caused a huge pecuniary loss to the government and corresponding illegal gain to the firm.
CBI had lodged two separate cases against the former OC officials.
The first case, registered under IPC and Prevention of Corruption Act, pertained to the award of contract to AM car and Van Hire Limited for various functions related to the conduct of the QBR, preceding the sporting event.
They have been booked under sections 468 (forgery of court records and public documents), 471 (using forged documents as genuine), 120-B (criminal conspiracy) of IPC and Prevention of Corruption Act.
The second case involves A M Films and the probe agency had named Mr. Patel, Mr. Mahendroo, Mr. Darbari and others under sections 420 (cheating), 120-B (criminal conspiracy) of IPC and Prevention of Corruption Act.
