The Congress Working Committee (CWC) on Monday authorised party president Sonia Gandhi to decide on the candidates for the coming Presidential and Vice-Presidential elections.
The resolution, authorising her, was moved by Finance Minister and senior leader Pranab Mukherjee, who is himself considered the front runner in the race for the President’s post.
The resolution was adopted unanimously at the day-long meeting of the CWC chaired by Ms. Gandhi, party sources said.
Major political formations like the Congress-led UPA and NDA are yet to announce their strategy for the next month’s Presidential election, while AIADMK and BJD have declared former Speaker P. A. Sangma as their candidate.

Ohh and we are still beating drum of beig the largest democracy.. what a
mockery of system... even if BJP is divided on its next PM candidate due
to multiple candidates, it is at least more democratic!!
what a democratic process? democracy is dead; and we can not say 'long live democracy'!
Sri Vayalar Ravi has vouchsafed on the way his party functions. It is a
method adopted by those who were with Indira Gandhi in the post-split
days of the Grand Old Party of India. The pity is that Indira Gandhi won
majority for her party and whereas congress under Sonia Gandhi is
winning less than 200 seats using the mascot "congress"- a homemade word
for every Indians.I am sad to comment on these lines though I am a
congressman- a organisational congressman at that.
Atlast now Mr Pranabmukherjee put the onus on the pary leadership. The CWC itself was convened after the Prime Minister announced in a Press conference that he is happy in the present post. Normally it should have been the Prime Minister who moved the resolution authorising the Party President to choose the Presidential candidate of the Congress Party- to show to the rest of the world that both the party and the government are with the President of the Party. Instead Mr Pranab Mukherjee who is the contender for the first citizen himself moved the resolution. Is it a fact that there exists difference between the Prime Minister and Part Presidend Sonia Gandhi?
Considering the present economic situation of the country, perhaps it is
right time to bring eminent economist and nobel prize winner Shri
Amartya Sen as president who will guide and also bring high standards in
the political circles.
