Curfew continues in Maharashtra city

March 17, 2013 11:38 pm | Updated 11:38 pm IST - Mumbai:

Communal clashes in Udgir city of Maharashtra’s Latur district led to the second consecutive day of curfew on Sunday.

The controversy started after a group of Hindu right wing organisations alleged that the ‘green’ flag was hoisted atop the city’s fort. On Saturday morning, they staged demonstrations in front of the municipal office and later a protest march throughout the city.

According to the police, the trouble started after the protest march entered the area dominated by the Muslim community. “There are allegations from both sides that the opposite side pelted stones initially. The crowd damaged property and shops in the vicinity,” said a police officer.

B.G. Gaikar, the Superintendent of Police, Latur, told The Hindu that the administration decided to impose indefinite curfew to keep the situation under control. “There are several injured persons and we did not want to let the situation worsen further, hence we immediately imposed curfew, till the tension ends.”
