The tussle between moderates and hardliners on the All-India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) over the next course of action, following the Allahabad High Court verdict on the Ayodhya title suits, is likely to dominate Saturday's working committee meeting here.
The issue is whether the AIMPLB will become a party in the title suits as an intervener when the issue comes up before the Supreme Court considering that the Uttar Pradesh Sunni Central Waqf Board has decided to appeal against the September 30 verdict.
The AIMPLB legal committee meeting, held on October 9 in New Delhi, is understood to have favoured the idea of filing an appeal. A decision on the issue would be taken on Saturday.
While some AIMPLB members, representing the hawks, want to challenge the verdict in the Supreme Court, there are others who feel that the option of reconciliation should be explored in addition to filing an appeal. “The legal option should be taken as failure to do so would be a historical blunder, but the option of reconciliation should also be explored,” an AIMPLB member said on condition of anonymity.
Saturday's meeting, in the Darul Uloom Nadwatul Ulema, will be presided over by board chairman, Maulana Rabey Hasni Nadwi. Vice-president Maulana Syed Kalbe Sadiq, general secretary Maulana Syed Nizamuddin, assistant secretary-general and spokesman Maulana Abdur Rahim Qureshi, the convener of the AIMPLB's Babri legal committee, Syed Qasim Rasool Ilyas, and members of the working committee will attend.
