A CPI(M) State Committee meeting, which got under way here on Sunday, assumes significance in the context of disciplinary action initiated against some senior leaders for alleged anti-party activities during the February 14 Tripura Assembly elections.
Prominent north Tripura leader Jayanta Chakraborty was compelled to resign as Kailashahar Nagar Panchayat chairman pending an ‘enquiry’ against him. Mr. Chakraborty and a few others were charged with sabotaging party nominee Maboswar Ali’s prospects in the Kailashahar constituency. The CPI(M) lost the seat to the Congress by a narrow margin.
Another top leader and MLA, Madhav Saha, had to relinquish the post of secretary of the Udaipur divisional committee in south Tripura. The Congress wrested Udaipur from the former Minister Joy Govinda Debroy of the RSP, a Left constituent.
Several other party men in various ranks are also facing action on basis of review reports submitted by divisional committees. CPI(M) sources said the two-day meeting would discuss reports of all 19 divisional committees on poll results. For the first time, the sources said, the party was enquiring into ‘acts of indiscipline’ on the part of leaders from different areas.
