The Communist Party of India (Marxist) has asked the government to come clean on its “role in influencing CBI investigations” in the coal blocks allocation case.
In a statement here, the Polit Bureau said the information that the agency’s status report, submitted to the Supreme Court, had been scrutinised and modified after discussions with the Law Minister and the Prime Minister's Office, was another glaring instance of the government's interference in a CBI investigation.
In this episode, the obvious aim was to influence the investigation in a case in which the PMO and the United Progressive Alliance government were directly implicated, the statement said.
“The government must come out with what actually transpired and who are the persons involved in this matter. Appropriate action should be taken against those involved in charges of interfering with the course of justice.”
This latest instance of government misuse of the agency only reinforced the case for strengthening the CBI’s autonomy and the need for parliamentary oversight, the CPI(M) said.
