The Communist Party of India on Wednesday condemned the police firing on peaceful protesters at Jaitapur in Maharashtra and demanded that a compensation of Rs. 10 lakh be given to the family of the person killed in the firing on Monday. It also demanded suitable compensation for the injured.
In a statement, the party's Central Secretariat said several countries were reviewing their nuclear policy following the Fukushima catastrophe. “But the Government of India adamantly persists in importing nuclear reactors from abroad, including Areva reactors from France which have several faults in their design.''
Party supporters in the region, farmers and fishermen were agitating against the installation of a nuclear power plant at Jaitapur, not only due to security concern but also because of the disastrous effect it would have on the environment and the livelihood of the people.
The CPI charged the government with adopting strong-arm methods such as firing, curfew and ban on entry of people to the site in order to thrust the nuclear plant on them.
The statement said curfew and the ban must be revoked forthwith, work on the project stopped and the entire nuclear policy re-examined.
“Brutal repression”
The CPI (Marxist-Leninist) Liberation too condemned the “brutal repression'' of people. The party said it would take part in the Tarapur to Jaitapur march.
