The special court, hearing a case of corruption in the conduct of the Commonwealth Games, will conduct the proceedings daily to expedite it. The case, filed by the CBI, relates to the award of Timing, Scoring, and Results System contract to Swiss Timing, causing a “wrongful loss” of Rs.95.6 crore to the exchequer.
On Wednesday, the court rejected the bail applications of the five accused, including the former Secretary-General of the CWG Organising Committee, Lalit Bhanot. They sought bail on the ground of parity with the accused in the 2G spectrum allocation scam case, claiming that both cases related to “financial irregularities.”
The others, whose bail petitions were rejected are AKR Constructions promoter A.K. Reddy and the former Organising Committee officials, A.S.V. Prasad, Surjit Lal and M. Jeyachandran. The senior Congress leader and former Organising Committee chairman, Suresh Kalmadi, is the first accused.
Special Judge Talwant Singh said: “The bail pleas of the five accused are dismissed. As soon as the scrutiny of documents is over, this case will be taken up on a day-to-day basis.”
Mr. Singh said: “I have requested the Delhi High Court to reduce the burden of this court. It will finally be decided by the High Court, but this case will be heard on a day-to-day basis.”
The court also disposed of Swiss Timing's application for separation of trial, saying this had become “infructuous.”
Meanwhile, the Delhi High Court refused to stay the legal proceedings against Swiss Timing.
