The Supreme Court on Monday noted that it cannot interfere in policy decisions and declined to entertain a writ petition questioning the training given by India to Sri Lankan defence personnel.
A Bench of Justices Aftab Alam and Ms. Ranjana Desai dismissed the petition filed by advocate N. Raja Raman.
The petitioner said the Union government initially imparted training to nine Sri Lankan Air Force personnel at the Air Force training centre in Tambaram, near Chennai. Following objections from Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa and other political leaders, the training was shifted to Bangalore. Subsequently, he sent a petition to the authorities requesting them not to permit any such training but there was no reply. Hence the petition.
The Centre’s action had wounded the feelings of Tamilians. By not considering the appeals from various political parties and the petitioner’s representation, it had not honoured the sentiments of Tamilians.
The petitioner sought a direction to dispose of his representation dated July 7.
