Court extends police custody of MHA officer

May 21, 2016 03:14 am | Updated September 12, 2016 07:32 pm IST - New Delhi:

A special court for CBI cases on Friday extended for four days the police custody of MHA Under Secretary Anand Joshi.

The investigating agency had arrested Mr. Joshi on May 15 for issuing notices arbitrarily to NGOs registered under the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act, allegedly for bribes.

The court had next day remanded him to five days’ police custody.

Special Judge Anju Bajaj Chandna has extended his custody till May 24, allowing the probe agency’s submission that the accused was to be confronted with certain emails sent to private persons and properties in the name of his wife.

Seven files recovered

Counsel for the agency also submitted that the accused was required to be questioned on seven new files recovered during the investigation.

Counsel for the accused opposed the plea for extension of the remand, submitting that the CBI had got enough time to question him.

Mr. Joshi had gone underground after the CBI registered the case and conducted searches at his Ghaziabad residence.

The agency had arrested him at Tilak Nagar in West Delhi as he was not cooperating in the probe.

The CBI alleged that files relating to several NGOs had gone missing from the Home Ministry. They were later recovered from his house although he was not supposed to take them home.

He had been dishonestly issuing notices to several NGOs or Societies registered under the FCRA, the CBI alleged.
