Country now junior partner of the U.S.: CPI(M)

June 10, 2016 01:33 am | Updated October 18, 2016 02:56 pm IST - NEW DELHI:

The CPI(M) on Thursday launched a scathing attack on the Modi government, hitting out both at its foreign policy initiatives and the “polarising statements” of the BJP leaders.

Criticising the India-U.S. joint statement, a party release said: “The 50-paragraph India-U.S. joint statement issued during the visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the US titled ‘The United States and India: Enduring Global Partners in the 21st Century’ is a declaration that cements India’s role as a strategic junior partner of US global strategic designs.”

“The agreement covers a range of issues from climate change and India’s commitment to enforce the Paris Declaration; on Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) endorsing the U.S. objectives which are declared as common interests of India as well; civilian nuclear cooperation and importantly defence agreements,” it said.

Referring to the Asia Pacific and the Indian Ocean region, the release said, “This has dangerous implications for India’s relations with the South Asian countries. India’s interests in the Asia-Pacific and the Indian Ocean region have now been equated with the U.S. interests and the U.S. strategic objective of ‘containment of China.’

It wondered how the Prime Minister could say he respected the Constitution if his Minister Sanjeev Baliyan continued in office after making divisive statements.

CPI(M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury also released a booklet attacking the government on multiple fronts as it completed two years in office.

The Modi government has clearly abandoned India’s longstanding policy of developing good neighbourly relations and also the Look East Policy, the release said.

CPI (M) leaders Sitaram Yechury and Brinda Karat said that while the Prime Minister was going around the world saying the Constitution was his sacred text, a Minister in his government Sanjeev Baliyan had gone against the Constitution by seeking to know who all had consumed beef in Dadri apart from Mohammad Akhlaq, who was lynched there months ago.

“Modiji should answer how Sanjeev Baliyan continues to be in Council of Ministers? Is it possible that he continues to be there despite making such provocative, anti-Constitutional and anti-humanity statement without Modiji's blessings? Baliyan should be sacked immediately,” Ms. Karat said.
