Corporation set up for development of railway stations

February 02, 2012 03:27 am | Updated July 24, 2016 01:01 am IST - NEW DELHI:

Apparently jettisoning the path of PPP and in the face of little progress being made towards developing railway stations to world class standards, the railways has given the job to a corporation which was set up here on Wednesday.

The Railway Stations Development Corporation Limited was set up as a special purpose vehicle between two other subsidiaries of the railways — IRCON International Limited and Rail Land Development Authority — to develop railway stations located in the metropolis in the first phase.

MoU signed

Heads of the two PSUs signed the MoU in the presence of Railway Minister Dinesh Trivedi and Minister of State for Railway K.H. Muniyappa.

The budgetary announcement was for developing 50 railways stations across the country to international standards as a public-private partnership venture, but little progress could be made for various reasons.

Evading a question on whether the PPP mode had been given up, Mr. Trivedi said the corporation, which would function under a CEO, would carry out the first phase of work of solving congestion problem and improving the ambience and, should it succeed, then it could be given the second phase of job of providing modern amenities.
