At AICC session, he makes an emotional speech recalling his family’s contribution
Critics — and there are many of them — may question his credentials. The media have described Rahul Gandhi becoming vice-president of the Congress as a case of “coronation” of the “yuvraj” — an extreme application of dynastic politics in a democracy. On Sunday, Rahul Gandhi often invoked his dynastic credentials in his speech at the AICC session — but in a manner that moved and energised his party colleagues who were quickly hoping that the effect would have rubbed off on the ordinary voters, too. Mr. Gandhi then swiftly proceeded to call for sweeping changes in the party and government and make a strong pitch for a rule-bound party organisation where party workers, not outsiders, would get importance.
In his first speech as the de-facto number two of the Congress, Mr. Gandhi recalled how his father was “broken” by his mother’s death — gunned down by guards with whom Rahul used to play badminton. There was enough of the Gandhi-Nehru family nostalgia to move his audience — including hard-bitten veterans sitting on stage — to tears and a standing ovation. But in the 40-minute-long speech, he also spoke of the need to decentralize power, strengthen panchayati raj institutions and use technology to ensure transparency. The system, he said, needed to accommodate the voices of the people, and ensure the participation of the aam aadmi in the decision-making process, which is currently the preserve of a few people working behind closed doors in Delhi. For the last two days, the under 45s spoke loudly and clearly in the five chintan shivir sessions, reflecting the concerns of a young India, the one that has dominated recent street protests and social media chatrooms. If an excited young MoS told The Hindu that “the message of these three days is Rahul Gandhi,” a more seasoned cabinet minister described Rahul Gandhi’s as India’s “Obama moment of 2008”. That is hyperbole, and some senior leaders cautioned that the impact of Mr Gandhi’s elevation was yet to be judged. But it couldn’t be denied that Mr. Gandhi had succeeded in energising the delegates — if not the whole party — who repeatedly interrupted his speech with rousing cheers. And when he sat down, younger delegates rushed to the stage as party seniors hugged him.
If the new vice president spoke of the pitfalls of power, he also spoke of hope: as a child, he said he learnt to play badminton “to bring some balance” into his life. His teachers were two policemen who later assassinated his grandmother — and he lost that balance. When he accompanied his father, Rajiv Gandhi, to hospital, he recalled, he was “broken inside and, like me, terrified of what lay in front of him. But when he addressed the nation on television that night, I felt a small glimmer of hope…. that small ray of hope in the darkness helped change India into what it is today.” Without hope, Mr. Gandhi said, nothing could be achieved.
If Mr. Gandhi moved his listeners to tears with his talk of power as a poisoned chalice and the transformative qualities of hope – even when born in despair — he also moved them to laughter as he mocked the Congress where rules are regularly given the go-by. “People often ask, how does this party run?” and then when all looks lost; it comes back with a bang.” The party’s secret weapon? “It is Gandhiji’s party, and India is in its DNA.”

Why no one in the media is asking Rahul this simple question---" Is there no one in Congress who is better equipped than you "
The Hindu's reportage of Mr. Rahul Gandhi's ascension within his party is disappointing in the choice of the phrases it uses to convey the news. Two days ago it was, "Congress prince crowned... ," and now it continues in the same obsequious vein by stating, "Coronation... ."
The Hindu would serve the nation better if it refrained from such fawning tones in its titles.
The points of focus in Rahul Gandhi's speech seem tangential to the issues of concern to the common man. It would have been more relevant to talk about why people should believe he is the right choice for the office of VP rather than talk about his or his family's emotional issues.
Trying to exploit peoples' emotions is an old gimmick of Congress and is disrespectful to the nation as a whole since it assumes that most people will give in to emotions and are dumb enough to take what the Congress gives them.
One really wonders what Rahul Gandhi has done so far beyond being born in the Gandhi family that makes him eligible for the current post. Is this the hallmark of a democracy?
very generalised, boring speech without focussing on specific issues
concerning party and how he would steer the party for 2014 elections.
Though as an young blood he might raise some enthusiasm among party
workers, more important is how he will build his image at grassroot
level, how he will reduce anti incumbency factor.
In a democratic system of class antagonistic society like ours, political elites with its historically sustained wealth and ideological power mechanism can elevate themselves from bottom to top with mirthful greetings from its sycophants. Structures of political parties in India, from Kashmir to Tamil Nadu (omit Communist parties) are nothing more than a delightful gathering of sons, daughters, son-in-laws and daughter-in-laws as politico-family clubs. To maintain a political party tightly under control and sway of a Main Family (Karunanidhi Family, Naidu Family, Gowda Family, Patnaik Family, Pawar Family, the Naidu Family, Scindhia and Pilot Families, Abdulla Family...) is one of laws of Indian political parties in the name of democracy. History shows that Rahul Gandhi’s great-grandfather Jawaharlal Nehru, his grandma Madam Indira Gandhi, his father Mr. Rajiv Gandhi and his mother Madam Sonia Gandhi were all elevated to the top posts in the party. This time it is Mr. Rahul Gandhi’s turn! Is this how Indian democracy reenacts itself or is it just as the greatest teacher Karl Marx once said “History repeats itself, first as tragedy, second as farce.”?
"Congress prince crowned.......", "the party's yuvraj...." etc
yesterday (20 Jan) and today again "Coronation over....". These
front page headlines in The Hindu made me wonder at first what these
are all about.
I have been subscribing to The Hindu mainly to get news as it is and
not for reading the personal views and sarcastic comments of some
new-found reporter presented as a report. These wordings to describe
the appointment of Rahul Gandhi as the Congress Party's vice
president were not found in any analysis or comment in the 'Opinion'
pages, but in the news report, bylined by Smita Gupta in the front
page. Responsible and reputable news media, the print ones
particularly, are expected to report news in a factual and accurate
manner without distorting the information by interspersing with
comments and opinions borne out of personal biases and prejudices of
the reporter. It is also unbecoming of a reputed daily to use such
derogatory terms to refer to leading personalities.
If he had already discovered the ills and maladies of his Party and the government it leads, then he should have offered some thing like a 20-point program which will be the action plan that public would have appreciated. And what he has been doing not only as Party General Secretary but also as close confidante of his mother who is the actual power center. His statement" corrupt people are talking about eliminating corruption" is laughable as he and his mother are behind decision to make Virbadrasingh as CM of HP even after his corrupt deeds are not fully investigated but he was rewarded for loyalty to his family.
" he learnt to play badminton “to bring some balance” into his life"
He could have continued badminton, why to swim in muddy politics?!! By now he got few medals like Saina Nehwal :P
If the Congress Working Committee elects Rahul as Vice President of the Party, it cannot be construed as coronation or Rahul as Yuvraj. Unfortunately, this what is happening in our own state and elsewhere in the country. If the citizens of India feel that such backdoor entry to the helm should not be approved, they should show it in the electroal process. Unfortunately, with limited option rather no option, we have to reconcile to our fate.
Whatever critique says, Rahul has delivered a sincere speech. His speech demonstrates that he has come a long way. In a speech of 40 minute he has touched the heart and his style of speaking was at par with any other good speaker. Good Luck to Rahul.
Is it right in a democracy to use the words 'Yuvraj', 'Coronation' etc? Why such unnecessary hypes even in responsible newspaper like 'The Hindu'? Of course, we wish Rahul good luck in effecting the transformation in the country.
Now that Rahul understands what is ailing Congress, it is time that the young VP starts cleaning the Party of the self serving sycophants and cheer leaders.
I still hope and pray that one day my India will get freedom from dynasty rule.
A crown prince in a democracy and the media with a responsibility to inform and educate people on matters of public interest has generally accepted this development wuthout raising any questions about it. Whither democracy in India, one may well ask.
I think Rahul needs to be reminded that the Cong (I) is not Mahatma
Gandhi's party but Indira Gandhi's. Will someone explain to him the
difference ?
Sundar
" The system, he said, needed to accommodate the voices of the people,
and ensure the participation of the aam aadmi in the decision-making
process, which is currently the preserve of a few people working
behind closed doors in Delhi". Really? As the saying goes, 'charity
begins at home'. Has he made consistent and sincere attempts to drive
home this excellent point in his home, where all powers are
concentrated, since he entered politics and if so with what results?
If not, who placed and what type of hurdles in his way? Expression of
pious and honest nationalistic intentions indeed, if taken to their
logical conclusions, will make India surely a vibrant and healthy
democracy. Otherwise these words would mean were intended to gain
applause from the limited audience in Jaipur and not to evoke the
right response from India that finds unity in diversity!
While Rahul is keen to move amongst all ranks to have democratic set up, mother sonia could not ,being a woman, her movement was also limited to nearby Leaders including Dr MM and others.
Hence It is going to be a great Herculian exercise to start almost from scratch for Rahul Gandhi to prepare like Gandhiji himself, moving only by walking across the country over a peirod of time.Hence
His chances of comign back to poor looks blink, since NON congress are poised for taking power in the nearby election, and Rajul Gandhi hast work back to rebuild the torn congress party within the next 10 years.
Well Rahul, if your family contributed to the Inidan Political process, it received also in abundance. The number of streets, stadiums, airport, government schemes (central and state) that has the name of one or other member of your family. One wonders that a country of one billion has only one family that could be called as leaders. You forgot to mention that your grandmother and uncle Sanjay (you may disown him but still he is blood) heaped enoromous miseries on the people of the country during emergency. You also forgot to mention that scams started under your father's sterwardship (Bofors).
Instead of harping on the family's contribution, you should have mentioned the party's contrubtion to the nation. Do not get carried away with the tears of the front benchers, they are actors without parallel.
The election commission demands that every party must have an approved
constitution and the Executive office must be elected ion a proper
manner, It seems these rules are not applicable to the Congress
party. They can create a post and select somebody without any
procedure,Is the EC sleeping?
Dear columnist
There is no reason why you should include the word coronation in this report. The Hindu is a
very dignified and unbiased publication and please do not allow it to stoop down to
sensationalism
Congress is solely owned and operated by Nehru Gandhi Pvt Ltd hence Indians have no choice ! Only when the opposition gets its act together, we can send them to rubbish heap of history !
After British left India, It is ruled by Ganthi Family. Indian is not a demacrtic county. It
is a mock. Only few political familes run the country whether it a state or rural
places. What is qualitys Rahul has other than from a family. How many people are
there in this party before him or with more experience. Why can they become VP?
What he has done to become VP?
Mr.Gandhi, Congress do not have better option than you. This nation do not have better option than congress, don't know if your party will come to power in next election or not but you will have a lot to play in hand, so a chance to prove what you can. All the best.
Good initiative taken by congress party by making Mr. rahul the Vice
president of the party but there is a big question mark on this youth
leader because there is a lot to be proven by him till yet.
Hmm.. As the old adage puts it, the first generation builds the company, the second lets it stagnate, and the third squanders it.
And who you think, Mr. Rahul Gandhi, is responsible for the youth
alienation? This corrupt oligarchy that we see in India is largely the
creation of the ruling class that your family has dominated since
Independence. You never have to prove anything before you aspire to be
the Prime Minister of the world's largest democracy. The ruling
oligarchy is hands-in-gloves with the big business and bureaucracy to
create a monstrosity of corruption and lawlessness. It's doubtful that
you can change that because you and your family have everything to
lose if you embrace the required change. Why did you not embrace the
change that Anna Hazare has been seeking? The youth of the country is
entitled to know as to how certain families including your own are
entitled to reign the country like monarchs. You may start by
encouraging true internal democracy in your party like the one in
British Labour Party. Will you? Doubt it very much.
As a party, congress has every right to become the ruling party. The party is owned, not led, by the Nehru descendents who operate by invoking Mahatma Gandhi's credentials. Democracy in India has long long ways to go yet, before the true potential of India can be unleashed. Not likely in my generation.
So funny. How is this a democracy if the same family continues to run the country?
Looks like India is still a monarchy hidden under the veil of Pseudo-Democracy.
I'm sure the Congress wasn't founded to rule just like the British did when we
initially got our independence but look what it has become. What about all the
other Congress party members who have worked their lives for this party (not that
I'm a supporter) and have way more experience to run a country? They just have to
shut up and sit back and Rahul Gandhi calls them Power Hungry politicians? Ironic
that he takes on the seat without even thinking about everyone else. What an
Idiotic Political party with a undemocratic ideology. Good Luck India!!
I am reminded of Oscar Wilde. A modest lady introduced herself to be the ugliest
lady in France. He bowed deep and corrected her, "No, Madame! You are the ugliest
woman in the world. Why youth? The entire Indian populace is alienated from the
political class.
As a first step will he ask all those in the Congress party above 50years to retire from politics and leave the party in the hands of youngsters?
It is not only youth; every ordinary citizen feels alienated. There are two classes now in the country - ruling and ruled. The ruling class is assisted by criminals. No one supported by ruling class is ever brought to justice. Be it the perpetrators of 1984 massacre of sikhs, or the economic offences of Hassan Ali, or the Lt. Governor who recommended issue of a second passport to the offendor. Ruling class never mingles with the ruled class. Did any minister ever visit the Chhatisgarh maoist area or NE provinces?
There is no need to fight for us. Just remove the hurdles in our path, and we will be very happy to fight for ourselves. The one request I have from the political class is to not talk, especially more than two sentences per day. Most of us will be very happy if our politicians can simply do their jobs without corruption.
Our youth are not alienated - they have better things to do than engage with the political class in our nation. What can be the charm in engaging with a bunch of hooligans, criminals and crooks, albeit punctuated with a few good people?
When dynasty politics are being followed, how can decentralisation
happen? Dynasty politics is also a kind of centralisation of power in a
family. A leader of a party should also be elected rather than
nominated.
