Sachin Pilot, Union Minister of State for Information and Communications Technology, has called for a coordinated global approach for combating cyber terrorism.
Mr. Pilot, who is leading the Indian delegation to the London International Cyber Conference called by British Foreign Secretary William Hague to discuss the threat from cyberspace, outlined the Crisis Management Plan developed in India to counter cyber attacks.
The Minister also highlighted the potential of cyber space and the tremendous opportunities it provided. He spoke at length about India's ambitious National e-Governance Plan meant to create a citizen-centric and business-centric environment, connecting every Indian to the information highway.
Mr. Pilot said India had been sharing its expertise with other developing countries. It had set up a Pan-African Network whereby 47 African countries were equipped to support e-governance, e-commerce, infotainment, resource mapping and meteorological and other services.
He pointed out that given that IT networks could be attacked from anywhere in the world and that digital footprints were easy to hide there was need for global coordination so as to ensure that the internet continued to thrive without the fear of it being misused.
Mr. Pilot also met his British counterpart Edward Vaizey, Minister for Culture, Communications and Creative Industry, and discussed matters of bilateral interest.
