Dozens of Congress workers protested outside the residence of BJP leader Subramanian Swamy here on Tuesday for his allegedly caustic remarks about Priyanka Gandhi and her husband Robert Vadra.

The party workers, led by former Delhi Minister Haroon Yusuf and former MLAs Mukesh Sharma, Tarvinder Singh Marwah and Harishankar Gupta, had assembled outside the Nizamuddin police station and marched to Mr. Swamy’s residence in Nizamuddin East.

While the police had barricaded the lane housing Mr. Swamy’s residence in the A-Block, some of the protesters, including Delhi Youth Congress president Amit Malik, managed to reach almost at his doorstep after a brief skirmish with the policemen. A number of women Congress workers, including Mahila Congress president Onika Mehrotra, also participated in the protest.

The security men stationed at the BJP leader’s house said Mr. Swamy was not home. At this, the Congress workers raised slogans against him and his party.

Reacting to reports of Priyanka Gandhi’s willingness to contest the Lok Sabha elections from Varanasi, Mr. Swamy had said: “She is very unpopular and she drinks too much alcohol.” Seeking an apology from Mr. Swamy for this, the Congress leaders said they would also file a complaint against him with the Election Commission.

“Mr. Subramanian Swamy is being deliberately used by the BJP for mudslinging. He must take back his comments on Priyankaji. Earlier too he had passed objectionable remarks against the Congress leaders. If he would not put a leash on his baseless allegations, we would be forced to intensify out agitation against him. We will also file a complaint with the EC,” said Mr. Yusuf.
