The Congress on Wednesday announced that it will observe the fourth anniversary of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government on May 26 as ‘ Vishwasghat Divas’ or ‘Betrayal Day’ to highlight what the party describes as “failures of the Modi government.”
Congress general secretary Ashok Gehlot and chief spokesperson Randeep Singh Surjewala addressed a press conference to spell out the party’s plan of action for May 26, but informed that party president Rahul Gandhi’s plan for the day is still being worked out.
Mr. Gehlot said that the Congress has resolved that it will work with other ‘liked minded parties’ to ensure that the Modi government is voted out in 2019.
“We are working for the 2019 election in a mission mode. Ever since Rahul Gandhi ji gave the call at the Aakrosh Rally on April 29, the Congress and other like minded parties will enter the field and stop the Modi government that is fascist and corrupt. They have disappointed every section and now we have resolved to get rid of them,” he said.
Dharnas to be held
Unveiling a poster themed on betrayal, the Congress party announced that it would hold protests and dharna in every district of the country on Saturday. “Prime Minister Modi got an absolute majority after 30 years and the Rajiv Gandhi government. There was a lot of expectation as tall promises were made by Modi ji by travelling across the country. But every year, there has been a betrayal,” said Mr. Gehlot.
‘Many failures’
The Congress said that whether it was providing two crore jobs to youth or giving 50% more than input cost to farmers as minimum support price, protecting scheduled castes and scheduled tribes, assurance of containing inflation or combating corruption, the Modi government has failed in every aspect.
“Modi ji had promised to end fear, corruption and hunger, but today farmers are pushed to commit suicide. If this is no betrayal, then what is? Modi ji had said 80 lakh crore of black money would be brought back and 15 lakh would be deposited in every account. Is this not a betrayal?” asked Mr. Surjewala.
From the recent cases of bank frauds to regular fuel hike, to repeated instances of cross-border violence along the border in Jammu and Kashmir to last year’s Doklam stand-off, Mr. Surjewala said the party would “expose these failures before the public.”
