The Congress has become the third party – after the TDP and YSRCP – to give a notice to move a no-confidence motion in the Lok Sabha against the Modi government.

In a letter to Lok Sabha Secretary General on Friday, Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge requested that a motion of no-confidence in the Council of Ministers be included in the revised list of business for March 27.

The party has issued a three-line whip to all its MPs in the Lok Sabha to ensure their presence, sources added.

The House – which was adjourned for the day shortly after noon on Friday – will meet on Tuesday instead of Monday now because of Ram Navami.

On Friday, notices of no-confidence by Thota Narasimham (TDP) and YV Subba Reddy (YSRCP) could not be taken up as the House was not in order.

Speaker Sumitra Mahajan then adjourned the House for the day, leading to 15 days of Lok Sabha sittings being washed out.

Homage to Bhagat Singh

Earlier, the House paid homage to freedom fighter and martyr Bhagat Singh by observing a one-minute silence on Martyr’s Day.

This is the first time in four years after requests from the Left and AAP MPs that the decision was taken, claimed a CPI (M) member.

After this, the House was adjourned till noon because of protests by members of Opposition parties on a range of issues.

When the House met at noon, the Speaker said after the laying of papers amid the din that she had received notices for no-confidence in the Council of Ministers.

She said she was duty-bound to take these up and that the treasury benches also had no problem with this.

She, however, added that she could proceed only if the House was in order.

As members from the AIADMK and Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) kept protesting in the Well of the House for the constitution of the Cauvery Water Management Board and higher reservation in government jobs, respectively, the Speaker said she needed to count 50 members standing at their seats but could not because of protests.

The Speaker then adjourned the House, saying it was not in order.
