The Congress slammed the Comptroller and Auditor-General (CAG) yet again on Monday, this time suggesting that the official auditor was taking its brief from the BJP. The Congress also said the CAG’s distorted reports must share the blame with the Opposition for disrupting the just-concluded session of Parliament.
The monsoon session became dysfunctional after the government tabled three reports of the CAG, including the explosive one on the allocation of coal blocks.
Congress spokesperson Manish Tewari said he had information that a senior BJP leader was in touch with some CAG officials, while one of its reports was being prepared. He also accused the CAG of “misusing” its constitutional position to arrive at irrational presumptive losses that had embarrassed the country and tarnished the country’s image abroad.
The BJP said it could not reply to unspecific charges, and there was no question of anyone from the party influencing the CAG.
CAG Vinod Rai was unavailable for comment.
