Attacking the Bharatiya Janata Party for obstructing the UPA government’s decision to introduce Foreign Direct Investment in multi-brand retail, the Congress on Sunday criticised the main Opposition party for “not essaying the role of a constructive opposition.”
The BJP itself had made a case for permitting 100 per cent FDI in retail in 2000 and has now conveniently forgotten the fact, said a Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) press release alluding to a recent Op-Ed piece in a prominent English daily.
The BJP was acting ‘irresponsibly’ by not supporting the Centre’s decision at a time when the country was facing an economic situation worse than in 2000, said the release, adding that reforms instituted by the UPA-II government were “imperative” as the entire world was mired in an economic slump.
“The BJP is opposing the very policies it once passionately supported during its tenure at the Centre. Moreover it [the BJP] is incapable of generating a strong leadership as it is riddled with factionalism and infighting,” said MPCC spokesperson Sanjay Dutt.
