Rajya Sabha Member Ram Jethmalani on Sunday accused the Congress of receiving payments from Union Carbide after the Bhopal gas tragedy and demanded that all the correspondence between the then Union government and the company on compensation payment to the victims should be made public.
Participating in a seminar on “Parliament and political culture,” organised by the Rashtriya Nava Nirmana Vedike to mark the 84 th birth anniversary of the former Chief Minister, Ramakrishna Hegde, here, he said the then Union government adopted a legislation appropriating the right of the victims to file a suit before the court to itself. It then promptly filed a suit seeking compensation.
Subsequently when the then Union Minister for External Affairs N. D. Tiwari complained over the poor compensation paid by the Carbide at a meeting of industrialists in New York, a representative of the Union Carbide retorted and referred to payment of adequate compensation.
