A scuffle broke out on Sunday between activists of the Congress and the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) over bogus voting during elections to the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC).
Police resorted to lathicharge at the Sanpada voting centre in the satellite city and detained 25 people for rioting and bogus voting, a police official said.
The Congress and the NCP, allies at the State and Centre, are fighting the election to the corporation in the neighbouring city separately.
Navi Mumbai is considered a stronghold of Excise Minister and NCP leader Ganesh Naik, who is aiming at bringing his party to power in the 89-member body for the third time.
Besides the Shiv Sena-Bharatiya Janata Party coalition, the MNS , the Samajwadi Party and the Republican Party of India (RPI)-Left combine are also in the fray.
