Congress denies rifts on move against CJI

When Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Ghulam Nabi Azad and former Law Minister Kapil Sibal addressed a joint press conference, leaders of only two other parties — NCP and CPI — were seen sharing the podium.

And that begged the question: is the Opposition or the Congress party itself divided? Trinamool Congress, the second largest Opposition party and the DMK, had refused to be signatories to the impeachment motion.

Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and former Finance Minister P. Chidambaram also didn’t sign. “These reports are absolutely false. We didn’t involve Dr. Singh... These are serious issues and required a lot of discussions. As for some other people you mentioned, they had different reasons,” Mr. Sibal said.

Political circles were rife that the Congress had planned the move to ensure Chief Justice Dipak Misra doesn’t decide the Ram Janmabhoomi case before he retires in October. Mr. Sibal, however, categorically denied this.
