The Congress on Friday maintained studied neutrality on the verdict against civil rights activist and award winning paediatrician Binayak Sen.
“The court trial has taken two years,” Congress spokesperson Abhishek Singhvi said. “The court had the evidence and has delivered its verdict. But Binayak Sen has the right to appeal against the verdict. It is not fair to discuss the case, and it would be inappropriate to make any comments.”
Mr. Singhvi pointed out that dismissing the verdict outright would mean that India was a “banana republic.” He urged everyone to take pride in the fact that the country had an “independent judiciary.”
