“An economist Prime Minister has to face the court due to Congress scams,” Union Environment Minister Prakash Javadekar told journalists.

“Manmohan Singh is paying for the mistakes of the Congress party.”

So even as the ruling party, the BJP, refrained from attacking Dr. Singh frontally, the case has come as a setback to the Congress that has thus far been successful in this session of Parliament in keeping the Modi government on its toes, forcing the latter’s parliamentary managers to strain every sinew to get its legislative business through.

At the Congress official briefing, Mr. Surjewala described Dr. Singh as “one of the tallest Congress leaders”, whose “integrity, fairness, and adherence to transparency is unimpeachable and unquestionable.”
