The Gujarat High Court on Friday asked the Special Investigation Team to try and complete its probe into the 2004 encounter killing of Ishrat Jahan in a month and directed its chief to investigate the retraction of statements by some key witnesses.

“Efforts shall be made by the SIT to try and complete the investigation and submit a progress report along with conclusion [if the encounter was fake or genuine] by September 8,” a Division Bench of Justices Jayant Patel and Abhilasha Kumari said. It scheduled the next hearing for September 9.
