Popular comedian and film director Jaspal Bhatti, who touched a chord with the masses with his humorous take on problems plaguing the common man, died when his car rammed into a roadside tree in the wee hours of Thursday.

The satirist’s son Jasraj who was driving the car and actress Surilie Gautam, the heroine of his film Power Cut which is to be released on Friday, were seriously injured in the mishap, police said.

The 57-year-old actor-director, who made his way into the hearts of his people with his satirical shows like ‘Ulta Pulta’ and ‘Flop Show’, was on a tour to promote the film when the accident took place near Shahkot in Nakodar area of the district at 2:30 a.m., Bhatti’s associate Vinod Sharma told PTI in Chandigarh.

They were rushed to a private hospital in Jalandhar where Bhatti was declared brought dead.

“His body was brought to the hospital after 3 a.m. and after medical examination he was declared dead,” said Dr Harpreet Singh.

Bhatti leaves behind his wife Savita, a son and a daughter Raabiya.

Mr. Sharma said that Bhatti was going to Jalandhar from Bhatinda for the promotion of his Punjabi film which is based on the frequent power cuts in Punjab.

Bhatti’s son Jasraj and Gautam have been referred to a Ludhiana hospital. According to doctors, they are in a stable but critical condition.

Born on March 3, 1955 at Amritsar, Bhatti graduated from Punjab Engineering College, Chandigarh as an electrical engineer.

During his college days, he was popular for his street plays which were spoofs ridiculing corruption in society.

Before venturing into television, he was a cartoonist for the The Tribune newspaper in Chandigarh.

His satire on the Punjab police, Mahaul Theek Hai, was his first directorial venture in Punjabi. He played the role of Jolly Good Singh, a guard, in the movie Fanaa. He also starred in the Punjabi film Jijaji.

Bhatti and his wife Savita competed in a reality show ’Nach Baliye’ in 2008. The couple put their best foot forward to entertain the audiences with their dancing and comic skills.

The cremation is expected to take place later Thursday evening after his body is brought to Chandigarh after completion of various legal formalities and post-mortem, Mr. Sharma said.

By giving his life he has this time EXPOSED the poorly organised
traffic system of India. Again mr bhatti has made a point its up to the
govt now to learn a lesson and pay attention to badly controlled
traffic flow. Jaspal ji you will always remain in our hearts.

Life is so cheap in India. ! Every day hurdreds of people loose their life on Indian roads in India. According to world report the death rate is highest on Indian roads not because of rash driving but due to lack of government management , commitment towards safety of common man !

I attended the very first show of the nonsense club (a comedy club founded by Jaspal Bhatti and like-minded PU/PEC students) in the Punjab Engg. College (PEC) Chandigarh, circa 1978/79 I think. I was a student of the Hons School in PU at the time, and my father taught at PEC. So we always had a bond of kinship with him, although I haven't follwed his career that closely. This definitely sent shock-waves through me and filled me with a profound sense of sadness.

I am also mad as hell at the banana-republic like law and order situation in India which is at the root of accidents like these. To some extent you can blame these kinds of accidents on the heterogenous traffic conditions in the country, but more than that, the blame falls on the politicains who always find a way to compromise the system to suit their convenience at the time. Once the system is corruptible, then it soon becomes a non-system, like our licensing and traffic enforcement. A tragic waste of life!

It is s great human and social loss of our society. People like are
the needs of the hour. HUMANITY has been main theme of his acts and humorous. He is physically no more but his contribution and remembrance will rule the heart and mind of every human being for
next many decades.
No none can take his place at any level be it humanity, humor or

I was sincerely saddened by the abrupt/premature passing away of this great man. I grew up watching and deeply admiring his satirical commentary on social ills. God gave him immaculate sense
of wit and humor, and clarity in thought and presentation, and yet
God took him away so suddenly. India will miss this great man who
has done his part in cleaning up the societal mess, and yet brought
tears of joy and laughter to the masses. May his soul rest in

To condole such a tragedy in words is a difficult task.As a great
writer has said, this world is only a stage where each one of us plays
his or her part and then must leave, when and where it is destiny ;
Having said that , I must say that he brought into focus an entirely
different class of comedy , which was always associated with a
socially relevant theme, this makes him stand apart and rather above
all comedians.

slackness in his comedy looking into the present social evils and
