Two Chinese nationals on board a merchant tanker were rescued by the Coast Guard after their vessel sent a distress signal on Friday night to the agency seeking assistance.

According to the Coast Guard, the two crewmembers — Fu Yaokun (34), a chief officer, and Lin Xin Mao (36), a bosun — sustained injuries while working on the deck. The duo was administered first aid but it was not sufficient and they required medical assistance.

On Friday night at 9.45 p.m., the master of the tanker made a request to the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre in Mumbai to evacuate the injured crew. On ascertaining the medical emergency, the vessel was directed to come to close to Mumbai, being the nearest port for providing specialised medical assistance. On Saturday, a CG 821 was pressed into action and when the vessel arrived 30 km west of the Mumbai coast, the evacuation was carried out after providing the necessary medical treatment on site to facilitate their transit by air,” a press release tated.
