He was Deputy CMO in Uttar Pradesh Family Welfare Department

The Mayawati Government suffered another jolt on Wednesday when the prime accused in the Chief Medical Officer (Family Welfare) murder case, Y. S. Sachan, was found dead under mysterious circumstances in the Lucknow district jail hospital.

According to police sources, Dr. Sachan apparently committed suicide as his body was found hanging from a ceiling fan in the toilet of the jail infirmary.

Official confirmation regarding the cause of death was awaited as Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati and her officials, rudely shaken by the incident, went into a huddle soon after the news came on Wednesday night.

A Deputy CMO in the State Family Welfare Department, Dr. Sachan was admitted to the jail hospital on Tuesday. He reportedly committed suicide around 8-30 p.m. on Wednesday.

He was in jail following the murder of the CMO (Family Welfare), B. P. Singh, on April 2 after he was charged with financial irregularities in purchase of drugs and equipment under the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM).

On June 17, Dr. Sachan was charged with plotting to murder Dr. Singh and another CMO (Family Welfare), Vinod Arya, who was killed on October 27, 2010. Dr. Sachan was accused of murdering his superiors following the interrogation of three persons, Ram Krishna Verma, Anand Tiwari and Vinod Sharma, who were arrested in Lucknow the same day (June 17).
