Trinamool Congress was today headed for a massive victory in the prestigious Kolkata Municipal Corporation elections, surging ahead of the Left Front winning 64 of the 85 seats the results for which were available till 1130 hours.
The Left Front, which currently holds the 141—ward KMC, so far managed only 14 seats, a distant dream from its tally of 75 wards in the 2005 election.
Congress, which fought alone having failed to clinch a tie—up with Trinamool Congress after acrimonius exchanges, has cut a sorry figure, winning only six seats. BJP has won only one.
While the Trinamool Congress and Left Front had fielded candidates in all the 141 wards, Congress had contested in 108 wards which saw a straight fight between the LF and Trinamool in the remaining 33 wards.
In the 2005 polls in the Kolkata civic body, the Left Front had won in 75, Trinamool Congress 42, Congress 21 and BJP three.
The Trinamool Congress also wrested the Bidhannagar Municipality, better known as Salt Lake city adjacent to the metropolis.
Of the 25-ward municapality, the Trinamool Congress had won in 18, while the Left Front in seven wards.
