January 12, 2013 02:05 am | Updated November 16, 2021 10:37 pm IST - Pune:

Five days after the violence in Dhule, which left more than 200 injured and six dead in police firing, police handed over the investigation to the CID. SP Pradeep Deshpande made the announcement on Friday.

“A special CID team will probe the incident. There will be local officers from Dhule and the team will be decided by the CID headquarters in Pune,” he said. So far, one person has been arrested in connection with the violence. According to official sources, cases of inciting violence and creating damage to property have been registered against more than 800 unknown persons.

A minor scuffle that broke out in the Machhi Bazaar area in Dhule lead to the violence between the Hindu and Muslim communities.

Allegations against the police for targeting Muslims have led into the order for a separate magisterial probe to look at whether police firing was necessary in the incident.
