The BJP on Sunday said Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi’s assertion that his party would not support a third front lacked credibility even while dismissing the possibility of a ‘third front’ being in a position to form the government.
BJP leader Arun Jaitley noted that though Mr. Gandhi had categorically ruled out supporting any third front, “the party’s track record does not inspire confidence.” Hinting that the Congress would make an effort to keep the BJP’s PM nominee Narendra Modi out, he said, “The best case scenario for the Congress is a rag-tag coalition to keep Mr. Modi out.” He noted that CPI (M) general secretary Prakash Karat had said that Congress support was needed for a ‘secular’ combination to come into being. The choice was between a “Modi-led NDA and a chaotic coalition,” he said.
