Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan on Tuesday met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to brief him about the violence in Mumbai following protests against Assam riots.

Mr Chavan met the Prime Minister at his office in Parliament to explain the steps taken by his government to control the violence that broke out in Mumbai after a rally by Raza Academy on Saturday to protest the killings of Muslims in Assam.

“I met the Prime Minister to brief him about the violence in Mumbai and the action taken by the government,” he said.

Mr Chavan had reportedly sought an intelligence probe to ascertain the conspiracy angle in Saturday’s rioting in Mumbai which claimed two lives and left 54 people injured.

He will also meet Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde and other Central leaders during his visit here.

Mr Chavan appeared dismissive about opposition demands for removal of Maharashtra Home Minister R R Patil.
