Police tame supporters who attempt to storm court complex
A special CBI court on Tuesday sentenced former Haryana Chief Minister Om Prakash Chautala and his son Ajay Chautala to ten years rigorous imprisonment for illegal selection of over 3,000 junior basic trained (JBT) primary school teachers in 1999-2000 by replacing the original selection lists compiled from 18 Haryana districts with fake ones.
Special Judge Vinod Kumar sentenced eight others including Mr. Chautala’s political advisor Sher Singh Badshami, his former OSD Vidya Dhar, and the former Haryana Director of Primary Education Sanjeev Kumar to ten years’ rigorous imprisonment. One person was sentenced to five years and 44 others were sentenced to four years in prison.
But the day was marred by violence after Indian National Lok Dal workers tried to force their way into the court complex and police personnel responded by using tear-gas and lathis. Unlike last Thursday when the police were caught napping by the sudden influx of INLD supporters into the court complex, on Tuesday a heavy police contingent was present, which quickly nipped two strong attempts by supporters to storm the court complex.
The first attempt to enter the Rohini court complex was around 9-30 a.m. which was quickly repulsed by the police. The workers allegedly hurled two bottles containing crude petrol bombs and pelted stones. But they retreated as soon as police waved lathis and fired tear gas at them.
Around 11-30 a.m., after news of the sentencing reached them, the supporters regrouped and made another attempt to get past the police cordon. Again, the police responded quickly, firing tear gas shells to disperse the mob. The police had also sealed border roads with Haryana from Monday night that reportedly prevented more INLD workers from reaching Delhi.
The scam broke after one of the convicts, Sanjiv Kumar, moved the Supreme Court in 2003 with a writ petition alleging that he was pressurised by O. P. Chautala to replace the original award lists with the fake ones. On investigation he was also found to be part of the conspiracy.

@ vaidya: “Mr Chautala at his old age has to undergo imprisonment for
nearly 10 years .. whole case can reviewed once again to release him to
under house arrest only”.
And set a precedent for all the old criminals to be released to enjoy
the homely custody?
What kind of message we are sending out?
Committing illegality is perfectly okay?
Strange argument indeed!
At last the justice has been done; only if it was done for all cases in the country (getting investigation open and CBI involved) on not selectively where the party in power is not involved.
This is yet another example which shows how rampant is the malice of corruption in the Indian politics.
Though I am happy, it is said that "justice delayed is justice denied".
It took 13 long years after the scam took place, how can one be
convinced that justice delivered? It is only when trial takes shorter
time and judgements delivered quickly, system can inculcate fear in the
scammers.
This is good; will this happen to Congress or to its allies in power?
Prosecuting a Chautala, Jagan, Jaya, Gatkari, Yediyurappa.... but
dragging feet on others does seem law takes its own course but at
different speeds. How hard it is to liberate the Police and CBI from the
hands of ALL politicians at Center and in States?
When will the same will be imparted to congress politicians. Is this justice meant for only opposition
I am sweetly surprised to hear this. Finally politicians of all hue and
color are getting what they deserved. I hope this becomes an eye opener
and brings the fear of law in them. Hope this sets them straight.
Finally I feel that things are changing for good!
I really hope the decision stays for the full term of 10 yrs. He
deserves it.
They will be out within a year and increase their tally in the 2014
elections by offering sops, caste and if these 2 do not work- religion
all corrupted politicians & beaurocrats must be in jail.
We believe justice is deleivered to all the citizens of Haryana. The
autocratic, authoritative, divisive and corrupt rule of Chautala was
ended by the people of Haryana by giving thumping majority to
Bhajanlal(Congress Party). But Congress high command ignored and
decided against the wishes of Haryana voters. Same torrent rule
continued under congress rule and even today, situation is more or less
same. The social thread of Haryana is destroyed since than and people
other than the communities and constituencies of Chief Minister(s) of
Haryana are living under stifling conditions.
Note that scam happened in 1999-2000 and they have been rewarded punishment in 2012. What about those who were affected by this scam. Many deserving teachers would not have got a position. No doubt about good judgement, but late justice has inbuilt trauma for victims.
Sad that it took ten years to get the verdict. But this should be an eye
opener for all politicians. Law can get you even after a decade...
Its high time for us to cleanse the political system. Tampering with the credential
and pre-requisites of prospective teacher leads to the murky cycle of
recruitment and consequently jeopardize the education system which has
been at nadir, more importantly its the end user, children who will be
at the receiving end of it. If a system selects teachers on the basis
of graft, nepotism and favoritism then we must forgo the dream of
nation building. Moreover its morals and ethics at stake,,,,This
decision must act as a deterrent for those who dare to embark on this
noble profession with forged documents and clout.
I am happy that at last some action is being initiated against the tainted and guilty politicians against whom small persons do not seem to be having any remedy. They have all the powers to suppress the truth to ensure that no action is taken against them by any means. It was quite evident from the gathering of the protesting supporters outside the court in Delhi. At least now, the Government at the centre should establish a strong Lokpal and fast track court to try the corrupt politicians and officials. Although we may not have eliminated corruption completely, we can hope for the same some day.
This is a really welcome judgement by the court. The court has sent a
strong message to political class that nobody is above law.
This is really a welcome move . The court has sent a strong message to our politicians that they are not above law
It is indeed a exemplary judgment passed by the court and thanks to the CBI for a tight charge sheet against the accused. At least CBI has been very successful in one of its many failed cases.
But will the CBI be able to keep its endurance till the case reaches the Supreme court? If it happens this would teach other politicians a lesson.
How I wish that all the politicians involved in scams right from Bofors to Coal gate
are given the same treatment by fast track courts so that the drain on the country's
economy is substantially controlled.
What happen to our country "This many numbers of scams ?", If we take a survey the number of scams are going higher and higher every year. Then where is the mistake ? don't you think the mistake is somewhere within us. i raise my voice "Please Select the right leaders", our every vote means here. Vote the right persons.
When will this happen to TN politicians?
very shame on you Mr. Chautala. You have done wrong although being a
public servant. We had given power to you and misled us by using it for
nepotism and favoritism. He and his must be hanged till death.
It is rare to see a politician put in jail for corruption. I hope we
see more such arrests, trials, and convictions. We are one of the most
corrupt nations and yet hardly anyone ever goes to jail, so much so that
there is a big rush of children and grandchildren of politicians wanting
to enter politics and loot astronomical sums of public money. BTW,
whatever happened to the promise of bringing back within 100 days of
coming to power the black money stashed abroad ?
Mr Chautala at his old age has to undergo imprisonment for nearly 10 years for what he did when he was the chief minister. But now it is the ultimate responsibiity of the Jail authorities to keep him in good health too,for another 10 years. So, Mr.Chautala is now assured
of good health under custody in Jail:the whole case can reviewed once again to release him to under house arrest only
