Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj said here on Friday that P.C. Chacko, chairman of the Joint Parliamentary Committee looking into the 2G spectrum case, has no moral right to continue and preside over the committee as she said he had lost confidence of the majority members in it.
Addressing presspersons, Ms. Swaraj said that of 15 members who had expressed no-confidence, six were from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), and the others from the Left, DMK, AIADMK and other parties including the United Progressive Alliance government’s former ally Trinamool Congress.
Ms. Swaraj alleged that the draft report of the committee was selectively leaked to the media even before it was given to its members. She questioned the draft report absolving the Prime Minister and the then Finance Minister of all charges and blaming the then Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee who led the NDA government.
“The Congress has destroyed all democratic institutions one by one. The last is the JPC,” she alleged.
To a question, Ms. Swaraj said the Union government should come out with the truth over reports on Chinese troops camping on Indian territory for over a week. She said the Prime Minister, the External Affairs Minister and the Defence Minister should state clearly the truth. She said the government should not give scope for the 1962 situation by keeping people in dark.
Ms. Swaraj replying to another question said that Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi would campaign in Karnataka for the May 5 elections to Karnataka Legislative Assembly. She did not mention the places where Mr. Modi would campaign.
She reiterated that persons found guilty of raping children should be hanged and death penalty should be given to such persons. She was in the city while campaigning for the Assembly polls at Gonikoppal in Kodagu district.
