No final decision yet, say sources

The Centre is seriously considering a request from the Tamil Nadu government for allowing Parvathi Ammal, mother of LTTE supremo Velupillai Prabhakaran, to obtain treatment for paralysis in India subject to conditions.

Top official sources here on Tuesday said such a request had come from the State government to allow the visit subject to certain conditions. “It is being examined and no final decision has been taken yet.” After treatment, she may be asked to return to the country from where she arrived.

A top official of the Tamil Nadu government too confirmed that the issue had been taken up with Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram, who had promised to look into the matter.

Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi, during his visit here on Monday, had said that the State government had written to the Centre in this regard. Her deportation on April 16 night by the Centre, immediately after she arrived at the Chennai airport from Malaysia, had created a hue and cry in political circles.
