The Hindu erroneously reported in all editions of the paper on December 3, 2017 that the Centre had withdrawn its notification banning the sale of cattle for slaughter in animal markets. What was actually withdrawn was a notification — numbered GSR 493 (E) — that specified rules on the commercial use of aquariums and the display of animals in a fish tank. The notification that dealt with the cattle slaughter was GSR 494 (E). Both notifications were amendments to rules under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act and issued on the same day, May 23, 2017, by the Union Environment Ministry. The Hindu deeply regrets this error.
