June 29, 2014 03:05 am | Updated 03:05 am IST - HYDERABAD:

Plans are afoot to provide insurance cover to nuclear power plants and an insurance pool in this regard is being established with General Insurance Corporation in the lead, Atomic Energy Commission Chairman R.K. Sinha said.

The proposed insurance for property loss would cover all nuclear plants, including existing ones, Dr. Sinha told reporters on the sidelines of a function flagging off the first consignment of equipment for the world’s largest high-altitude gamma ray telescope in Hanle, Ladakh, built by the Electronics Corporation of India Limited (ECIL) here. Asked about reservations on liability from nuclear suppliers, he said “we are on way to finding a solution to that.” He said the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL), Ministry of Finance and the insurance companies were dealing with the issue and a group of experts was looking into the risk mechanism.
