Union Health and Family Welfare Ministry is contemplating filing a review petition in the Supreme Court against the Bench’s verdict, quashing the common medical entrance test. Union Health Minister, Ghulam Nabi Azad told reporters here on Friday that legal recourse was the only option available and that the Ministry sought legal opinion on the judgment.
“We are very upset [over the judgment] and have asked officials to study the order to decide on the future course of action,” he said.
The Minister said the government was “expecting a better outcome” but “unfortunately that did not happen.” He said the court ruling, was “a little demoralising for us because we wanted to clean up a number of things.”
He said the Supreme Court merely said that Medical Council of India (MCI) should not conduct exams but did not say who else should conduct the tests.
Pointing out that the order would lead to problems for those aspiring for medical degrees, Mr. Azad said students across the country now have to run from pillar to post.
The apex court on Thursday struck down the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) for medical and dental undergraduate and post graduates saying the Medical Council of India had no powers to hold such a test.
