Trinamool Congress Chief Mamata Banerjee on Monday lashed out at Prime Minister Manmohan Singh saying that he had not called her when she was on a hunger-strike during the Singur agitation because he may have not have wanted to annoy the Communist Party of India (Marxist).

“When I was on a hunger strike for 26 days [in December 2006] against forceful land acquisition, at that time the Prime Minister was in the city. He did not call me. Perhaps he did not want to annoy the CPI(M),” Ms. Banerjee said in an interview to some local television channels here.

‘Minister cut call'

She also added that during Nandigram agitation, when she called up a Union Congress minister for help, he had disconnected the call.

Ms. Banerjee pointed out that the Centre had not given any special financial package to the State since her government assumed power in May 2011.

“The Centre has not given us anything. Before the election, the Prime Minister had said that the State will get help. I have held five meetings with Pranab Mukherjee.

The media also wrote that big help was coming. Nothing has happened. But I am against begging and we will hold our heads high in whatever we do,” she said.

On her party's relations with the United Progressive Alliance-led government Ms. Banerjee said: “We have a responsibility to maintain the alliance. .”
